The pieces of this puzzle are based on Penrose tiles (see "The Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose).
Most tiles that we are familiar with produce repeating patterns, such as tiles in the form of equilateral triangles, squares or regular hexagons. But Penrose tiles have the remarkable property that they can be used to completely cover an infinite two dimensional plane and are guaranteed NOT to produce a repeating pattern.
• The pieces in this puzzle are not actual Penrose tiles, because you could easily tile a two dimensional plane with them and produce a repeating pattern. Real Penrose tiles have some additional notches in their sides so that they only fit together in certain combinations.
